I don't think maintenance is the main issue. The compiler is 20,000 (?)
lines of code that is almost "new". The interpreter is less lines of
code that has been in constant use for around a decade. Ten years from
now, if the compiler is buggy, it will be because it hasn't received the
attention that the interpreter has up to this point.
